He heard a bell ring, he lit the fuse that would blow the bridge up, and went to open the gate for the survivors so that they could all cross before it ble up.

But he did not make it, cause of a miscalculation, he lit the fuse for the barrel to high up and was blown to pieces, but he helped everyone else escape.
